The word “paranormal” is made up of two parts: para and normal. In Greek, para means “beside,” or “beyond.” Paranormal describes ghosts, alien abductions, magic, and mind reading—almost anything that modern science cannot explain. So basically, the supernatural spooks us out but also makes us feel a bit curious at the same time.
One example of the supernatural occurred on June 30, 1908, in the snowy woodlands of Russia. There was an explosion that was 1,000 times more powerful than the nuclear bomb that detonated over Hiroshima in 1945. This Tunguska event created a huge ring of fiery devastation, and scientists still can't explain how it happened. Some believe it was a comet that never made impact, but what if it's actually evidence of advanced alien technology?
Then there's the unsolved mystery of the Mothman sightings. Starting in 1966, a series of reports describing a giant winged creature appeared in West Virginia in the United States. These sightings mysteriously stopped right after the collapse of the Silver Bridge in 1967, a disaster that killed 46 people. There are those who believe that the Mothman was sent to warn local townspeople of the coming disaster. Others believe that the Mothman might have been what destroyed the bridge in the first place. These lingering questions are why the legend of the Mothman is still considered to be an unsolved supernatural mystery by many people throughout the United States.
And what about those unexplained balls of light that can materialize in the middle of nowhere, far away from any electric lights. Are these spooklights proof that ghosts exist? One famous example of this phenomenon is the spooklight near Hornet, Missouri, in the United States. This creepy white light looks like it's dancing up and down. It has shown up constantly in the woods outside of town since the late nineteenth century. Some locals say that it's the ghost of two Native American lovers who died after being expelled from their homeland. Others believe that it's the lantern of a miner who got lost hundreds of years ago. Whatever it is, the Hornet Spooklight is keeping people guessing.
