So, you want to learn a new language. Good for you! But there's something you should know: not all languages are created equal. Some of them will have you happily communicating with native speakers in a few weeks, and others will make you toil for an entire year before you can even start complaining about the weather. Japanese is another Asian language that will take a lot of toil to master. It's almost like the opposite of Cantonese. Pronunciation is easy, and there are few tones, but the verb tenses will make you want to pull your hair out. What's more, you have to learn a whole new verb tense if you want people to stop thinking that you' re rude.
If you'd rather learn a tongue-twisting European language, then Hungarian is a good choice. Hungarian nouns have 18 different cases. Memorizing them won't be your only problem. To speak Hungarian properly, you need to become familiar with all of the different sounds that your throat can produce. Hungarian pronunciation can be extremely difficult for non-native speakers.
If none of these appeal to you, there are plenty of other languages in the running for world's hardest. Finnish, Polish, Estonian, Navajo, Basque, and Icelandic are only a few of them. Just remember: no matter what language you decide to study, perseverance is the key to fluency.
